Best supplements for the heart – the best capsule to protect against high blood pressure

The heart is used to pump blood around the body, and having a healthy heart is crucial to a healthy life, as organs around the body need a constant supply of blood for fresh oxygen. You could improve the health of your heart by regularly taking magnesium supplements, it’s been claimed.

Magnesium supplements are one of the best types of vitamins to protect against high blood pressure and heart attacks.

Maintaining a healthy blood pressure will subsequently lower your chances of having a deadly heart attack.

Magnesium helps the body to release a hormone-like compound, named prostacyclin, according to Holland and Barrett.

Prostacyclin reduces the tension in blood vessel walls, which lowers blood pressure.

“Magnesium is involved in over 300 different processes in the body,” it said.

“It helps keep our bones, teeth and muscles healthy, and now evidence shows it has a role to play in reducing our blood pressure too.”

Magnesium also works alongside other nutrients in the body to protect the heart, it added.

“Potassium helps the walls of the blood vessels relax, while calcium helps them tighten and relax properly,” said the retailer.

“These minerals work alongside magnesium to maintain a healthy blood pressure, so eating a balanced, colourful diet is a must.”

All men need at least 300mg of magnesium every day, while women need 270mg.

If you decide to take magnesium supplements, you should avoid taking more than 400mg within a 24-hour period, said the NHS.

Most people should get all of the magnesium they need in their daily diet.
