Vitamin B12 is a crucial ingredient for the healthy running of the body, as it’s needed to make red blood cells. But, you could be at risk of a vitamin B12 deficiency if you develop a strange, tingling pain in your hands.
Signs of a B12 deficiency can develop very slowly, so it may be difficult to diagnose the condition.
People with undiagnosed symptoms should consider that they may have a vitamin B12 deficiency, according to charity Thyroid Patient Advocacy.
While it’s unlikely that your symptoms are caused by the condition, there are still many people that have a lack of B12.

The pain may feel like a tingling pain in the palm of one, or even both of your hands, said the charity.
The sharp pain can strike at any time, and there doesn’t seem to be any reason behind when it develops.
The pain isn’t likely to last for long, but the sharp nature of it may be unpleasant.
If the deficiency isn’t treated, this pain can move down your hands toward your wrists.

“If you have any unusual undiagnosed symptoms, perhaps you should consider whether you have a vitamin B12 deficiency,” said the charity.
“The symptoms often come on so slowly that a B12-deficient individual may become accustomed to them, and not complain until the symptoms become severe.
“Sharp stabbing, tingling pain in the palm of one or both hands [may be a sign]. This occurs suddenly and for no apparent reason in a spot directly below the ring finger, approximately where the first palm crease is.
“If B12 deficiency is not treated, a tingling pain may begin to occur along the outside edge of the hand, starting from the wrist. This pain occurs when the wrist is flexed backward.”

Meanwhile, you could also be at risk of the condition if you develop unexplained white spots on the outside of your skin.
These spots tend to appear on the outside of the forearm, and tend to get whiter the longer they’re left untreated.
Some patients also develop sores at the corners of their mouths, said the charity.
They’re raw spots which tend to come and go, and can stretch across the edge of the lip.

Other, more common warning signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency include tiredness, jaundice, and feeling dizzy.
You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms.
But you can top up on the vitamin by eating certain foods.
The best sources of vitamin B12 include beef, liver, dairy foods, eggs, and salmon.
