Avocados are a “wonder food” that could lower your total cholesterol, according to dietitian Juliette Kellow and nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.
The fruit are rich in monounsaturated fat, which provide a number of heart-healthy benefits.
Everyone should aim to eat half of an avocado between three and four times every week, they said.
“Creamy and delicious, avocados are loaded with good fats that lower cholesterol and protect against wrinkles,” they wrote in their book ‘Eat Better Live Longer – Understand What Your Body Needs To Stay Healthy’.
“They are also packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that help with everything from keeping eyes healthy to regulating blood pressure.
“Adding avocado to diets has been shown to reduce total cholesterol, LDL [bad] cholesterol, and triglycerides, while also boosting HDL [good] cholesterol.
“These heart-healthy benefits are most likely thanks to avocados being high in monounsaturated fat.
“Avocados also contain heart-friendly phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol, which help to lower blood cholesterol levels.”
Regularly eating avocados could also improve the health of your prostate, and could even protect against prostate cancer, they added.
The fruit contains carotenoids that support the health of your eyes, and can lower your chances of developing cataracts or macular degeneration.
Avocados are rich sources of the mineral potassium, which could even play a role in lowering blood pressure.
