Men who regularly smoke cannabis increase risk of developing testicular cancer, study claims

Men who regularly smoke cannabis increase their risk of developing testicular cancer, according to a study by US experts.

Revealing their findings in the monthly journal of the American Medical Association, the scientists wrote: ‘Regular marijuana use was associated with development of testicular germ cell tumours.’

They added: ‘Sustained marijuana use may increase the risk for testicular cancer.’

The researchers calculated long-term cannabis users were 36 per cent more likely to have developed testicular cancer than similar men who did not use the drug.

Those pushing to legalise recreational use of cannabis sometimes suggest the drug’s many compounds have cancer-fighting properties.

Each year around 2,400 UK men, half under 35, get a testicular cancer diagnosis.
