Vitamin D: The health benefits of taking supplements
Dr Naomi Newman-Beinart (PhD), health expert and nutritionist (BSc), said nutritional deficiencies are common because of a culture of fast food and unhealthy diets.
Shockingly, around 50 percent of the UK’s energy comes from processed and ultra-processed food and drink, Dr Naomi pointed out.
Processed foods include:
- Cheeses
- Bacon
- Salted nuts.
Ultra-processed foods include:
- Cereals
- Sausages
- Biscuits.
Nutritional deficiencies can cause a person to feel exhausted and more prone to illnesses.

One of the “must-have” supplements Dr Naomi recommends is vitamin D3, which can cost as little as 8p a day.
“I recommend the BetterYou D 1000IU Oral Spray,” said Dr Naomi, who added that vitamin D is vital for bone and immune health.
Taking this supplement is “essential through winter” as people are unlikely to get enough of the vitamin from sunlight at this time.
Another supplement recommendation is iodine, which can cost under 50p per day.

“Iodine is an essential mineral that your body can’t make by itself, so we must depend on food or supplements to get what we need,” said Dr Naomi.
“Iodine plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormones, which are important for vital bodily processes such as metabolism.”
Low thyroid hormones can lead to low energy, constipation and weight gain.
“I love Doctor Seaweed’s vegan and organic ‘Weed and Wonderful’ Hebridean Ascophyllum seaweed capsules,” said Dr Naomi.
“They contain only natural ingredients from food sources, providing natural nutrition in a much easier and more convenient way.”
Dr Naomi also recommends collagen and magnesium supplements to improve joint repair and support mood.
“I recommend Correxiko’s Collagen Peptides Powder, which is completely natural,” said Dr Naomi when it comes to collagen (costing under 60p per day).
As for magnesium, Dr Naomi suggested BetterYou’s Magnesium Bath Flakes that cost under 60p per day.
