Dr Hanna Kinsella is the founder of Icy Bear Dental and Principal Dentist and Kiln Lane Dental. The dentist is passionate about tooth care and helping clients achieve whiter teeth.
The professional recently discussed a natural DIY teeth whitening trick Britons can do at home. Now she addressed the products they use.
The ingredients in your tooth products can help to change the colour of your teeth.
Reading the ingredients in your toothpaste will set you on the way to a brighter smile.
What ingredients should you look for in your products to whiten teeth?
Dr Hanna said: “I would always recommend choosing a toothpaste brand that contains fluoride as this is essential for fighting decay and protecting against cavities.
“It decreases demineralisation, enhancing remineralization and inhibiting bacterial activity.”
Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are two more ingredients to look out for.
Dr Hanna said: “Usually teeth whitening toothpastes include one of a number of whitening ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.”
What is hydrogen peroxide?
Dr Hanna said: “Hydrogen peroxide is an active bleaching agent. It is a weak acid with strong oxidizing properties so it steals the electrons that hold the atoms together, causing the staining molecules to fall apart.

“So it will change the colour of your teeth rather than just removing stains on the surface.”
What is carbamide peroxide?
Dr Hanna said: “Carbamide peroxide is another bleaching agent similar to hydrogen peroxide.
“The quantities of these in teeth whitening toothpastes will be significantly less than the quantities you would find in single-use whitening products such as strips or trays.”
The doctor includes a fascinating ingredient in her own range of tooth care products, Icy Bear.
The toothpaste includes diamond dust, to buff teeth.
Dr Hanna said: “Icy Bear diamond dust whitening toothpaste is even better for teeth whitening than standard teeth-whitening products because although it contains hydrogen peroxide, it also contains a precious ingredient combination containing one carat of very fine diamond dust.
“Diamond is a natural abrasive agent that reduces surface stain and polishes the surface of the enamel to restore the teeth to their natural whiteness.”
Dr Hanna recommended eating and avoiding certain foods to keep teeth white.
Certain foods contribute to enamel erosion and tooth decay, resulting in a yellow smile .
Dr. Hanna said: “Two of the most prevalent diseases, tooth decay, and periodontal or gum disease, may be preventable by making simple changes to your diet.”
Eating dairy for breakfast can help boost tooth health, as can drinking green tea.
