Older age is a risk factor for a myriad of serious health problems, ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to heart disease.
The good news is that the risk of most of these conditions could be slashed by smart dietary decisions.
While your overall diet is more important than a single ingredient, there’s one food candidate that seems especially potent.
Research, published in The Journal of Gerontology, found that anti-inflammatory blueberries could help promote healthy ageing.
Whether you add them to your yoghurt or just devour them on their own, the small blue fruits offer more than a sweet flavour.

Apart from their content of beneficial nutrients, blueberries rank as one of the best fruits for their antioxidant activity.
These goodies have been linked to reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which are both considered the foundations for many age-related diseases.

“We know that blueberries are mini nutritional powerhouses providing vitamin C, calcium, potassium, magnesium, folate and manganese, as well as anthocyanins and a diverse range of polyphenolic compounds such as quercetin, so it makes good sense to eat them regularly as we age.”
In a previous interview, Dr Andre Brittain-Dissont, the clinical lead at Extensa Anti-Ageing Clinic, told Express.co.uk about how blueberries offer anti-ageing and anti-cancer effects.

When it comes to the amount of blueberries you should eat, the doctor recommended 75 grams daily.
He said: “[This] is an excellent addition to your diet and a super healthy replacement to any factory-made snack you tend to reach for.”
