Diabetes is a very common condition that affects about five million people in the UK, although almost 14 million are now at increased risk of high blood sugar. But taking some herbal supplements could help to lower your risk of developing diabetes symptoms.
Diabetes is caused by the amount of sugar in the blood becoming too high.
It’s caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.
Insulin is needed to convert sugar in the blood into useable energy.
If you have diabetes, you could lower your risk of complications by adding some herbal supplements to your diet, it’s been claimed.
One of the best supplements for diabetes patients is turmeric, according to nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.
Turmeric is a yellow/orange powder that’s commonly added to curries to give them their distinctive colour.
But its active ingredient, known as curcumin, could help to improve insulin resistance in diabetes patients.
Turmeric is also a natural anti-inflammatory, which lowers the risk of diabetic complications, including nerve or kidney damage.

Dr Brewer wrote on her website, DrSarahBrewer.com: “Used as a yellow-orange spice in the kitchen, turmeric contains an antioxidant mixture of pigments of which the most active is curcumin.
“Curcumin supplements have also been shown to improve insulin resistance by activating insulin receptors.
“In people with poor glucose tolerance (prediabetes), turmeric can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
“These are amazing results and it’s no wonder that turmeric is an increasingly popular natural treatment for type 2 diabetes.”
You could also lower your risk of diabetes by adding more cinnamon to your diet, it’s been claimed.
Cinnamon tree bark contains antioxidant polyphenols that improve insulin receptor sensitivity.
Eating more cinnamon over a four-week period could help to significantly lower fasting blood sugar levels, she added.
Patients also saw improvements in their balance of ‘good’ cholesterol to ‘bad’ cholesterol.
It’s not always easy to know if you’re at risk of diabetes, because the symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.
The most common symptoms include fatigue, passing more urine than normal, and feeling very thirsty.
It’s vital that you speak to a doctor as soon as possible if you think you might have diabetes.
Left untreated, the condition can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
