Jenna Bush Hager Reveals the Advice Mom Laura Bush Gave Her About Feeling 'Guilt' Over Pregnancy

Jenna Bush Hager can’t wait to meet her third child on the way, but she has been struggling with some complicated feelings surrounding her pregnancy.

After Bush Hager announced on Monday’s episode of Today that she and husband Henry Hager are expecting a baby brother for their daughters Poppy Louise, 3½, and Margaret “Mila” Laura, 6, new mother of two Hoda Kotb called in from maternity leave to offer her heartfelt congratulations to her new 10 a.m. co-host.

Of course, it wasn’t the first she was hearing the pregnancy news. “Jenna, first of all, you’re amazing. And when you told me that you were pregnant, I still remember because … we were wondering about adoption issues, but listening to you, I was praying,” shared Kotb, who recently welcomed her second daughter, Hope Catherine.

“And you said, ‘Oh Hoda, I feel so bad.’ I said, ‘Please don’t!’ I was literally kind of holding onto a little secret and look at us, now it’s all out in the open,” she added, referring to baby Hope’s arrival.

Bush Hager, 37, went on to share that after she first found out she was pregnant, she initially felt guilty.

“When I had that conversation with Hoda, because I knew she wanted this baby, I called my mom [Laura Bush],” she remarked, explaining that her sister Barbara Pierce Bush — who recently had a second wedding to husband Craig Coyne — is also trying to get pregnant.

“I said, ‘Barbara’ — who just got married — ‘and Hoda, they want these babies, and I have this guilt.’ And my mom
said, ‘Everybody gets their babies when they’re supposed to,’ ” Bush Hager remarked. “My mom and her mom before her struggled with infertility forever, and so I thought that was a beautiful thing to say.”

Continuing, she said, “I don’t take this lightly. I know how blessed and lucky I am. It’s an amazing gift. So Hoda, thank you for your love and happiness and support — and give that baby a kiss.”

Bush Hager’s big news came the same day her fellow Today star Dylan Dreyer revealed that she and husband Brian Fichera are experiencing secondary infertility and had a miscarriage over the winter season.

“When we came in, I saw Dylan’s post and my heart sank for her because I think we all, at some point, have struggled with something,” Bush Hager told Dreyer and Meredith Vieira — the latter of whom was filling in for Kotb, 54 — during Monday’s episode of Today.

“Even if you knew I was doing this story today, I would never ever want to have that be the reason why you didn’t announce this today. This is so amazing! My sadness does not take away from your joy,” Dreyer, 37, told Bush Hager.

“And I’m not even that sad right now,” continued Dreyer, who is mom to 2-year-old son Calvin Bradley. “I’m just in a crappy situation, to be honest with you, and I’m hoping it all works out.”

Touching on her own struggles to conceive, shortly after revealing the sex of her baby on the way Monday, Bush Hager explained that while it’s nice to be expecting a son, she and her husband just wanted to have a “healthy baby.”

“We weren’t really trying to get pregnant. We had some fertility issues with Poppy. So we just — it was a date night,” she shared, adding with a laugh, “Sorry, Mom!”
