A Michigan family is dealing with two tragedies after a couple married for 47 years died on the same day at virtually the same time after they were both diagnosed with and hospitalized for coronavirus.
Leslie "LD" McWaters, 75, and his wife Patricia "Pat" McWaters, 78, died of COVID-19 on November 24, according to their joint obituary. The time of death was too close to call, with both times recorded by hospital staff at 4:23 p.m. "Those of us that know them, know that mom went first and said, 'LD, it’s time to go!'" said the obituary.
“It’s tough enough to lose one parent but this was the worst,” Joanna Sisk, the couple's daughter, told local news outlet WDIV. “Our entire family is completely devastated.”
Patricia was a registered operating room nurse at Foote Allegiance Hospital in her hometown of Jackson, Michigan, while Leslie was a truck driver, US Navy veteran, and Lion's Club member, according to the obituary. The two loved to dance at Julie's Bar, where they first met.
The obituary mentioned that the couple was nearly inseparable—doing almost everything together, "so it should be no surprise that they went to be with the Lord together within the very same minute," stated the obituary.
Leslie and Patricia are survived by two daughters, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the The Humane Society of the United States Disaster Relief Fund or to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
According to the New York Times, the coronavirus has infected at least 388,518 people and killed 9,572 across the state of Michigan.
