In recent years, the phrase “sex toy” has become synonymous with the word “vibrator”—even though the two aren’t quite the same. Sure, vibrators largely dominate the sex toy space. But there are tons of other toys out there that don’t buzz, rumble, or even really move at all. These non-vibrating sex toys deserve just as much space in our conversations—and in our sex toy drawers—as the average vibrator.
Non-vibrating penetrative sex toys can basically be divided into two categories: penetrative vaginal toys and penetrative anal toys. (Most clitoral toys vibrate, which is why you won’t find many here.) Penetrative vaginal toys are offered in a range of materials—silicone, jelly, stainless steel, glass, even rose quartz. (Yup, they have crystal dildos now.) Penetrative anal toys tend to come in silicone, glass, and metal. And as you’re shopping, you’ll notice some overlap between the genres. (While vaginal penetrators tend to be girthier than anal ones, some toys are fit for both kinds of play.)
There are, of course, other kinds of toys on the menu. (Products used for BDSM don’t tend to vibrate, for example.) But for the most part, vaginal and anal penetrators abound. These toys are excellent for things like temperature play, strap-on sex — even double penetration. They might not replace your favorite vibrator, but you shouldn’t really expect that from them. Non-vibrating sex toys offer entirely different experiences than vibrating ones. That’s not a good or bad thing— it’s really just an excuse to experiment.
