New gadget can zap away cluster headaches – and it’s available on the NHS

Headaches may be able to be “zapped” away thanks to a new NHS gadget which blocks pain signals.

The gammaCore device can aid people suffering from cluster headaches – which can be horrendously painful.

it does this using a low-level electrical current which is sent into the neck.

The gadget will be available on the NHS so that patients who get repeated headaches can stop them in their tracks or prevent a headache from happening.

Stephen Powis, NHS medical director, said: "While they may be small, these devices will make a huge difference to people who suffer from these debilitating headaches – relieving painful symptoms and allowing people to go about their daily lives as normal.

"This is the latest example of the NHS testing the latest tech and rolling it out at speed for patients across the country."

Around one to two people per every 1000 get cluster headaches, reports the Sun.

And, they are supposedly more common for people in their 30s and 40s.

Cluster headaches can feel like a sharp burning or stabbing sensation on one side of the head.

Patients report that the headaches can last between 15 minutes and three hours.

Some people can have up to eight cluster headaches every day.

Ouch!

And, some women have claimed that the pain is worse than childbirth.

NHS England stated that one in 20 patients do not respond to traditional treatments like oxygen and painkillers.

Around 11,000 people will benefit from the device after two years of clinical trials.

The tech was funded by the Medtech Funding Mandate policy.

Matthew Whitty, director of innovation and life sciences for NHS England, said: "The Gammacore device will provide life-changing benefits for thousands of people and it is just one of a number of technologies that are being mandated by the NHS."

And, Lord Bethell, Minister for Innovation, said: "It’s hugely encouraging to see innovative technology transform the way we treat illness on the NHS.

"This new gammaCore device will bring relief to many who suffer from cluster headaches and is one of several innovative treatments available to patients on the NHS."

The gammaCore is one of many technologies being rolled out under the NHS Long Term Plan.
