A nutritionist advised one measure Britons can take on Christmas Day to prevent heartburn. Rosie Millen is a nutritionist for the gut health brand Bio-Kult.
She told Express.co.uk: “Rather than lying down after a large meal, try heading out for a walk.”
A walk after Christmas lunch with help beat off the middle of the day slump and heartburn.
It’s important to try not to eat too much in one go if you are worried about heartburn, too.
Rosie said: “You should also try eating little and often if you can, rather than big meals all at once.”
What can you do if you already have heartburn?
Rosie did suggest a home remedy Britons should be able to mix up easily at home.
She said: “If you do have a flare-up, try mixing baking soda in some water for instant relief.”
Baking soda can help to neutralise acid and soothe heartburn pain.

What is heartburn?
Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux, when acid from the stomach moves from the stomach up to the throat.
It can cause a burning feeling in the chest, which is very unpleasant.
Some foods or drinks make it worse, including alcohol and fatty foods.
If it keeps coming back you should see your GP. You may be suffering from gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).
According to the NHS, the main symptoms of acid reflux are:
- “heartburn – a burning sensation in the middle of your chest
- an unpleasant sour taste in your mouth, caused by stomach acid”.
Less common symptoms include:
- “a cough or hiccups that keep coming back
- a hoarse voice
- bad breath
- bloating and feeling sick”
Rosie also listed the food to avoid to prevent bloating over Christmas.
She said: “Wheat is one of the main foods to watch out for.”
Rosie also suggested avoiding dairy and fizzy drinks to reduce bloating and gas.
She said: “This includes beer, as the yeast in beer can often cause bloating in the gut.”
