In a study published in the National Library of Health, the benefits of Astaxanthin on heart health was investigated.
The study noted: “We investigated the effects of a dietary astaxanthin (ASX-O) on hypertensive rats (SHR), by determination of the level of nitric oxide and lipid peroxidation.
“Oral administration of the ASX-O significantly reduced the plasma level of nitrate compared to the control vehicle.”
The study concluded that Astaxanthin helped to improve elastin levels and arterial wall thickness to help keep the heart healthier.
In another study published in the National library of Health, Astaxanthin treatment for male infertility was analysed.
“Using a double blind, randomized trial design, 30 men with infertility of two months and female partners with no demonstrable cause of infertility received conventional treatment according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), and either a strong antioxidant Astaxanthin 16 mg/day or a placebo for three months, noted the study.
It continued: “The effects of treatment on semen parameters, reactive oxygen species (ROS), zona-free hamster oocyte test, serum hormones including testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Inhibin B, and spontaneous or intrauterine insemination (IUI)-induced pregnancies were evaluated.”
The studies result was ROS and Inhibin B decreased significantly with sperm linear velocity increasing in the Astaxanthin group but not in the placebo group.
“Although the present study suggests a positive effect of Astaxanthin on sperm parameters and fertility, the results need to be confirmed in a larger trial before recommending Astaxanthin for the complementary treatment of infertile men,” added the study.
